What is Scabies?

Scabies is a skin disease caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis mite. These tiny insects tunnel under your skin and cause small red bumps and severe itching. Scabies spreads easily from person to person, especially among people who live together. If one family member has scabies, a doctor should examine and treat other family members and close contacts at the same time.

Scabies is also known as sarcoptic mange. Animals can get scabies too, but the mites are a little different. Typically, the mites infesting pets cannot adapt to live on humans. However, you may have some sort of reaction to the mites on your pet.

The different types of scabies include the following:-

1. Crusted (Norwegian)

This type often occurs in people with defective immune system. This produces crusted areas covering a large area of the skin. If you have crusted scabies, you may have millions of mites instead of the 10 to 15 mites with classic scabies.

2. Nodular

This type is more common in children. The brownish-red nodules may persist long after the mite is gone.

3. Bullous

In adults, this type of scabies can be mistaken for bullous pemphigoid, another condition involving skin blisters.

4. Scalp

This type occurs on your scalp and may not have any symptoms other than scales that look like psoriasis.

What are the causes of getting scabies?

The minuscule eight-legged mite that causes scabies in people is tiny. The female mite creates a tunnel just below your skin, where she lays her eggs.
When the eggs hatch, the mite larvae make their way to the skin’s surface, where they develop and have the potential to spread to other parts of your skin or the skin of other individuals. Your body’s allergic response to the mites, their eggs, and their excrement causes the itch of scabies.

Close physical contact and, less frequently, sharing clothing or bedding with an infected person can spread the mite. Animals and humans are all affected by mites of their own species. Each species prefers a specific type of host and does not live too far from that preferred host.

Exposure to the scabies mite from animals can cause a temporary reaction on the skin of humans. But people generally cannot develop full-blown scabies from this source, as they can from contact with a human scabies mite.

What is the Treatment For Scabies?

Treatment for scabies involves eliminating the infection with medications. A prescription from a doctor is required for several creams and lotions. Your doctor will probably tell you to apply the medicine to your entire body, from the neck down, and to leave the medicine on for at least eight to 10 hours. Some treatments need to be applied again, and others may need to be repeated if fresh rashes and bills develop.

Because scabies spreads so easily, your doctor will probably recommend treatment for all household members and other close contacts, even if they don’t show any symptoms of scabies.

Medicines commonly prescribed for scabies include the following:-

1. Permethrin Cream

Permethrin is a topical cream that contains chemicals that kill scabies mites and their eggs. The prevailing consensus is that it is safe for adults, expectant mothers, and kids 2 months and older.

2. Ivermectin (Stromectol)

Doctors may prescribe this oral medication for people with an altered immune system, for people with crusted scabies, or for people who do not respond to prescription lotions and creams. Ivermectin is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for children who weigh less than 33 pounds (15 kilograms).

3. Crotamiton (Eurax, Crotan)

This medicine is available in the form of cream or lotion. It is applied once a day for two days. The safety of this drug has not been established in children, adults 65 years of age and older, or pregnant or nursing women. Treatment failure has been reported repeatedly with crotamiton.

Although these medicines kill the mites immediately, you may find that the scabies does not clear up completely for several weeks. Doctors may prescribe other topical medications, such as sulfur mixed in petrolatum, for people who do not respond to or cannot use these medications.

Along with medicines, the patient also needs to take special care of cleanliness. Having scabies, the patient is advised to avoid coming in contact with other people, because this skin disease spreads easily from one person to another.

Can Scabies be Prevented?

To prevent re-infestation and to keep the mites from spreading to other people, take these steps:

1. Clean all Clothes and Linen

Use hot, soapy water to wash all clothes, towels and bedding used within three days before starting treatment. Dry with high heat. Items you can’t wash at home can be dry-cleaned.

2. Starve the Mites

Consider placing items that you cannot wash in a sealed plastic bag and leave it outside in your garage for a couple of weeks. Without food, the mites die after a few days.

Difference Between Scabies and Eczema?

Both scabies and eczema cause itchy, red sores on your skin. Scabies, on the other hand, is brought on by a parasite, a mite that enters your body. There are occasionally patterns that resemble the lines found between banknotes.

A rash with an unknown aetiology is called eczema. It may come and go seasonally. It may appear as red spots or weeping blisters. Unlike scabies, eczema is not contagious. Treatments for eczema are made to control your symptoms. Treatments for scabies get the mites off your body.

If you have a red and scabies rash, contact your healthcare provider. Catching scabies as soon as you can can help you avoid spreading the disease to others. If it’s eczema, your provider can suggest treatments that will help with your symptoms.
